  • Maintenance Strategy: Impact of lubrication on machine reliability and lubricant life
  • Maintenance program strategies for lubrication excellence
  • Lubrication Theory: Friction, tribology, and lubrication regimes (boundary, mixed film, hydrodynamic, elastohydrodynamic)
  • Lubricant Categories: Gaseous, liquid, cohesive, and solid
  • Lubricant Formulation: Base-oil refining methods and API categories
  • Mineral base oils (naphthenic, paraffinic, aromatic)
  • Vegetable base oils and biolubes
  • Synthetic lubricant characteristics, applications, and compatibility

Grease Application, Lubricant Selection, and Testing

  • Grease Application and Performance: High and low consistency greases, grease separation, multipurpose greases, specific thickeners, high-temperature greases, coupling greases
  • Lubricant Selection: Viscosity selection, synthetic and biodegradable lubricants, lubricant consolidation
  • Lubricating oils for various applications (fire-resistant, hydraulics, turbines, compressors, bearings, chains, mist applications, gears, engines, pneumatic tools, spindles, ways/slides)
  • Selecting greases for various applications (chassis, couplings, anti-friction bearings, journal bearings, automotive bearings, automatic lubrication systems)
  • Lubricant selection standards development, testing, quality assurance, and approval procedures

Lubricant Testing, Application, and Preventive/Predictive Maintenance

  • Lubricant Testing and Performance Analysis: Filterability, oxidation stability, rust/corrosion tests, anti-wear tests, extreme pressure tests, demulsibility, grease consistency, dropping point, mechanical/rolling stability, water washout/spray tests, rolling bearing rust test, Koppers centrifugal stability test, oil separation/oxidation stability in grease
  • Lubricant Application: Oil drain, reservoir/system flushing, cleaning, filling, top-up, grease packing, re-greasing, grease changeout
  • Calculating re-greasing amounts and frequency
  • Selecting and managing lubricant application equipment and automatic lubrication systems.
  • Safety/health requirements for lubricant application
  • Lube surveys, record-keeping, leak detection, waste oil/filter management, and lubrication PM writing
  • Preventive and Predictive Maintenance: Creating and managing lube PMs, inspection checklists, used oil analysis for condition-based changes, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and technology aids (ultrasonic, temperature monitoring, shock impulse)

Lubricant Condition Control and Storage

  • Lubricant Condition Control: Proper sampling procedures and locations.

  • Sump/tank management for air entrainment, particles, water, sediments, heat, silt, and lubricant volume.

  • Lube reclamation requirements, feasibility, procedures, and oil analysis approval.
  • Lube Storage and Management: Optimum storage room design, maximum storage time, safety/health requirements, sampling, and reconditioning.

Review, Practical Application, and Certification Preparation

  • Review of key concepts and principles.
  • Practical application exercises and case studies
  • Creating and managing lube PMs and routes
  • Creating and managing the lubrication inspection checklist
  • ‎Procedures and methods for identifying root cause of lubricant failure
  • Group discussions and problem-solving sessions
